A Town Named for Its Trees
Auburntown was first called Poplar Stand, after the poplar trees that grew there, before it was renamed after Auburn, New York, and incorporated in 1949. Tree Service in Auburntown still involves plenty of those trees. Today, when people in Middle Tennessee say poplar they usually mean the tulip poplar, Tennessee's state tree: tall, straight, one of the fastest-growing native hardwoods, and capable of passing 100 feet.
Living with tall poplars
Poplars are handsome trees with a few habits worth knowing:
- They grow tall quickly, so a tree that looked a safe distance from the house 20 years ago may now be within falling distance
- Their wood is relatively light and can shed limbs in storms, especially dead lower branches shaded out by the crown
- Large old poplars sometimes develop hollow trunks, which are hard to see from the outside
- Their shallow surface roots can lift walks and get scalped by mowers
None of this means a poplar should come down. It means a large one close to a house deserves a look every few years for deadwood and decay.
A very small town
Auburntown covers about 0.58 square miles and had 272 residents at the 2020 census, in 87 households. Most properties around it are farms and rural homes. That shapes how tree work goes: longer drives, more room to drop a tree in one piece when it is safe, and more decisions about what to do with the wood. Many owners keep the trunk wood for firewood and have the brush chipped and spread.
Getting here
State Route 145 runs about 10 miles north from the west side of Woodbury to Auburntown. From Murfreesboro, it is a drive out through the northeast corner of Rutherford County. We schedule rural jobs in the area so the trip makes sense for the work.
When the wood is too good to chip
Rural removals raise a question town jobs rarely do: is the log worth something? Straight, clear trunk wood from a big hardwood can interest a local sawyer, but yard trees often hide nails, fence wire and old staples that make mills turn them down. If you want to keep a log, tell us before we cut so we can buck it to a usable length and set it where a trailer can reach it. Otherwise we cut it to firewood length or haul it.
Lines and burning
Middle Tennessee Electric lists a Cannon County vegetation contact, reachable through its tree program at (877) 414-7685, for limbs near its lines. If you plan to burn brush rather than haul it, check BurnSafeTN, where the state Division of Forestry posts whether a burn permit is currently required, and check local restrictions as well.

Auburntown Questions
Is a big poplar near my house dangerous?
Not by itself. The questions are whether it has deadwood, decay or a hollow trunk, and whether it is within falling distance of something important. We check those and tell you if pruning is enough or removal makes more sense.
Do you come out as far as Auburntown?
Yes. We work in Cannon County, including Auburntown and the roads around it. Grouping rural jobs on the same trip helps keep travel costs down.
Can you leave the trunk wood for me to split?
Yes. We can cut trunks into rounds at a length you choose and stack them where you want. Leaving the wood usually lowers the cost of the job.
What does tree work cost out here?
It depends on the tree's size, how close it is to buildings and lines, and what happens to the wood. We give free on-site estimates and put the price in writing before any work.
