Trees on Top of a Cave System

Rockvale sits on hollow ground, and that shapes Tree Service in Rockvale more than most people expect. Snail Shell Cave, on an 88-acre preserve owned by the Southeastern Cave Conservancy, has more than 9 miles of surveyed passage and is the longest continuous cave in Tennessee's Central Basin. Its entrance is a sinkhole about 125 feet wide and 60 feet deep. The wider cave system drains more than 100 square miles of land, and its water comes back up at a major spring on the Stones River.

What limestone ground means for your trees

Where bedrock sits close to the surface, roots spread wide and shallow instead of going deep. A big tree on thin soil can look solid and still have a root plate only a couple of feet thick. When the soil is saturated and the wind picks up, that kind of tree is more likely to tip at the root than to snap. We pay attention to:

  • Exposed rock or ledges near the trunk
  • Heaving or cracking soil on the side away from a lean
  • Low spots or small depressions in the yard that could mark a sinkhole forming
  • Mushrooms or soft wood at the root flare

Moving equipment carefully

Sinkholes and soft spots are a reason to plan routes for heavy equipment instead of driving straight across a yard. On many Rockvale lots we use smaller machines, put down ground protection, or lower wood in pieces rather than dropping a whole trunk. If you know of a sunken area, an old filled sinkhole or a spring on your land, tell us before the visit.

Wind damage in April 2023

On April 1, 2023, an EF1 tornado crossed from Marshall County into western Rutherford County. The National Weather Service survey lists trees knocked down along Bunker Hill Road and Hant Hollow Road, and a spotter separately reported several trees down near the 10800 block of Bunker Hill Road in Rockvale. Trees that were stressed but not toppled in that storm are worth checking, especially those with partial root failure.

Growing community

Rockvale had 1,279 residents at the 2020 census and has its own elementary, middle and high schools. New homes are going up next to older farm properties, and that mix brings two kinds of tree work: clearing and thinning on lots being built on, and care of big, old shade trees on the farms that were already there. When you build near a mature tree, keep trucks and fill dirt away from the root zone; compaction kills trees slowly, sometimes years after the house is finished.

Rockvale Questions

Why did my big tree tip over at the roots instead of breaking?

On thin soil over limestone, roots tend to spread sideways rather than deep. When that shallow root plate is soaked and the wind loads the crown, the whole tree can lever out of the ground. We look at root flare and soil depth when judging whether similar trees are at risk.

There is a low spot in my yard near a tree. Should I worry?

It could be nothing, or it could be soil settling into a void, which is common in karst ground. Do not drive heavy vehicles over it. Let us know before we come so we can route equipment around it.

We are building on a lot with old trees. Which ones should stay?

Keep the ones that are healthy, well shaped and far enough from the footprint that construction will not crush their roots. We can walk the lot before clearing and mark what is worth saving and how to protect it.

Does living near Snail Shell Cave limit what I can do with my own trees?

Trees on your own lot are yours to manage, but the cave preserve itself belongs to the Southeastern Cave Conservancy, so we stay off that land. On your side, keep fuel, oil and herbicide use to a minimum near sinkholes, since water on karst ground can run straight into the cave system below.
