Tree Care in the East Fork Valley

Woodbury is the seat of Cannon County, a town of 2,703 people at the 2020 census and about two square miles, set in the valley of the East Fork of the Stones River. Tree Service in Woodbury runs from yards on the town's older streets to farms and hillside lots out toward the county line. The East Fork rises on Short Mountain, the high ground east of town, and flows west through Woodbury toward Murfreesboro.

Wind off the high ground

Short Mountain matters for more than scenery. On the night of the April 1, 2023 tornado, the highest gust in the National Weather Service's list was 63 mph at Short Mountain, while Woodbury itself recorded 43 mph. That same storm, an EF2 that tore through Readyville, lifted about 3 miles west-northwest of Woodbury after damaging trees on Porterfield and Locke Creek roads. Higher ground near the valley catches stronger winds, and trees on exposed ridges and hillsides take more load than the same trees down in town.

A wet climate

Woodbury averages 57.57 inches of precipitation a year, and its climate is classed as humid subtropical. Heavy rain is good for tree growth and hard on root systems on slopes, where saturated soil can let a tree slide or tip. On hillside lots we check for:

  • Soil creep, where trunks bend at the base and then grow upright
  • Exposed roots on the downhill side
  • Erosion around the root flare after heavy rain
  • Trees that lean out over a driveway or the house below

An old town

Woodbury was established in 1819, incorporated in 1838 and named for Levi Woodbury. Trees around older homes in town have had a long time to grow, and the larger shade trees near houses, garages and sidewalks are often the ones that need deadwood pruned out or crowns lifted. Where a big tree sits close to the street or a neighbor's house, removal is done in sections with ropes rather than felled.

Getting around the county

U.S. Route 70S runs 19 miles west to Murfreesboro and 20 miles southeast to McMinnville. State Route 53 runs south to Manchester and north to Liberty, and Route 145 runs north to Auburntown. We work in town and out along those roads.

Pricing a job out of town

Travel time is part of any rural job, and so is access. A tree in an open yard on a paved street is quick to set up; the same tree at the top of a steep gravel drive may need smaller equipment and more hand work. That is why we do not quote by the tree over the phone. We come out, look at the access, the lean, what is under the tree and where the wood will go, and put the full price in writing. If several neighbors on the same road need work, scheduling them on one trip can help everyone.

Lines and the utility

Middle Tennessee Electric lists a Cannon County vegetation management contact. Its tree program number is (877) 414-7685. Call them if limbs are touching a primary line.

Woodbury Questions

Do you travel out to Woodbury and Cannon County?

Yes. Woodbury is about 19 miles from Murfreesboro on US 70S, and we work in town and on rural properties around it.

A tree on the hill above my house is leaning more each year. What should I do?

Have it looked at soon. A growing lean on a slope often means the roots are moving in wet soil. Depending on what we find, the answer may be reducing weight in the crown or taking the tree down before it fails.

Is it worth pruning a big old shade tree in town, or should it just come out?

A healthy old tree is usually worth keeping. Removing deadwood and reducing heavy limbs over the roof can extend its life. If there is serious decay in the trunk or major limbs, we will tell you that too.

Can you leave the wood for firewood?

Yes. Tell us when we quote, and we will cut trunk wood into rounds and stack it where you want. Leaving the wood usually lowers the price, since there is less to haul.
