Tree Care in a City That Rebuilt
Mt. Juliet sits in western Wilson County about 17 miles east of downtown Nashville, mostly between Interstate 40 and U.S. 70, with Old Hickory Lake to the north and Percy Priest Lake to the south. Tree Service in Mount Juliet has a split personality: newer subdivisions where trees are still young, and older lakeside and rural lots with big hardwoods. The city was formed in 1835 and incorporated in 1972, and the 2020 census counted 39,289 residents; the 2025 estimate is 45,172.
March 3, 2020
In the early hours of March 3, 2020, an EF3 tornado with estimated peak winds of 165 mph crossed from Hermitage into Wilson County. The National Weather Service describes a six-mile swath of EF3 damage near Mt. Juliet. Homes were leveled in the Catalpa Drive and Clearview Drive neighborhoods, warehouses were flattened along Eastgate Boulevard, and West Wilson Middle School and Stoner Creek Elementary were severely damaged. Three people were killed in Mt. Juliet.
Many of the trees in those neighborhoods were lost or removed afterward, and the replacements are now a few years old. Young trees are the cheapest to shape. A light structural prune in the first ten years, choosing one main leader and spacing out the main limbs, builds a tree that handles wind far better as an adult.
Lakeside properties
Percy Priest Lake is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir with 213 miles of shoreline. The Corps manages the public land around it, and trees on that land are not a homeowner's to remove. If your lot ends at Corps property, we confirm the line before cutting, and we keep chips and debris on your side. Lakefront trees also tend to grow toward the open light over the water, which can make them heavy on one side; reducing that weight is often a better fix than removal.
Homes and values
Census QuickFacts shows an owner-occupied rate of 72.1% and a median owner-occupied home value of $460,100 in Mt. Juliet. With homes at that value, a tree failure is expensive, and so is a careless removal. We rope down limbs near roofs, protect lawns and driveways, and spell out cleanup in the estimate.
What we handle here
- Structural pruning for young trees planted after 2020
- Weight reduction on lakeside trees that lean toward the water
- Removals of dead, damaged or crowding trees near homes and fences
- Stump grinding, including old storm stumps
- Storm checks for trees near the house after high winds
Fast-growing suburbs, young trees
Mt. Juliet added nearly 6,000 residents between the 2020 census and the 2025 estimate, and every new street gets builder-planted trees. A common problem is planting too close: a shade tree set six feet from a foundation will be touching the gutters well before it is full grown. If a young tree is badly placed, moving or removing it early is cheaper than fighting it for 20 years. We can also suggest replacements that fit the space, and Middle Tennessee Electric publishes an approved tree list for spots near its lines.

Mount Juliet Questions
We replanted after the 2020 tornado. When should those trees be pruned?
Now is a good time. Young trees respond well to small structural cuts, and correcting a double leader at this size takes minutes. Waiting until the tree is large makes the cuts bigger and riskier.
Can you remove trees on the Corps land behind my lake house?
No. The land around Percy Priest Lake is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and we only work on trees on your property. We confirm the boundary before cutting.
My lakefront tree leans out over the water. Does it have to come down?
Not always. Trees often lean toward the light over open water. If the roots and trunk are sound, reducing the weight on the heavy side can make it much more stable.
