Old Houses, Older Trees

Bell Buckle is a town of about half a square mile and 410 residents at the 2020 census, and its downtown is on the National Register of Historic Places as the Bell Buckle Historic District. The town is known for its restored Victorian homes, shops and churches. Tree Service in Bell Buckle often means working close to buildings that cannot be replaced: wood porches, slate or metal roofs, decorative trim and old brick chimneys.

How a railroad town grew its trees

The Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad reached the area in 1852, a depot followed in 1853, and the town incorporated in 1856. After about 1870 it became a major stockyard on the line between Nashville and Chattanooga and grew past 1,000 people. The Webb School, a college preparatory boarding and day school, moved here from Culleoka in 1886. Many of the shade trees in town were planted in that era or grew up beside houses built then, so some are very old and very large for the lots they stand on.

Working beside historic buildings

On a historic property the order of work changes. We:

  • Look at the roof, gutters and porch under the tree before deciding where anything can be lowered
  • Rope down limbs piece by piece instead of dropping them, even small ones over a porch roof
  • Keep heavy equipment off old brick walks and stone edging
  • Grind stumps carefully near old foundations, which are often shallow and sometimes unmortared stone

If the tree is healthy, pruning is usually the right call: removing deadwood, reducing heavy limbs over the house and clearing chimneys. If it is failing, sectional removal protects the building.

Small town, two state routes

State Routes 82 and 269 meet at the center of Bell Buckle. Route 82 runs east about 8 miles to Beechgrove and Interstate 24 and west about 5 miles to US 231; Route 269 runs south about 5 miles to Wartrace and north about 11 miles to US 231 near Christiana. Streets in town are narrow, so equipment and the chipper are positioned to keep the road open, and festival weekends are best avoided for big jobs.

Festivals and timing

Bell Buckle holds two yearly festivals, the RC Cola and Moon Pie Festival and the Webb School Arts and Crafts Fair, both of which fill the streets. If you want a big tree pruned or removed in town, we schedule around them.

Trees and old wiring

Older homes sometimes still have overhead service drops running through the crown of a front-yard tree, along with phone and cable lines strung over the years. Before any pruning near the house, we trace where each line runs. The service drop from the pole to your house can be cleared with care, but primary lines on the pole are the utility's to deal with, and we do not cut near them.

Strange but true

In June 1940, during Army maneuvers, a tank from General George S. Patton's Second Armored Division collapsed the town's two-story town hall.

Bell Buckle Questions

Can you remove a big tree right next to an old house without damaging it?

Yes, by taking it down in sections and lowering each piece on ropes. It is slower than felling, and the estimate reflects that, but it keeps the roof, porch and trim safe.

Is it better to prune or remove a very old shade tree in town?

If most of the crown is alive and the trunk is sound, pruning is usually better. Old trees can be kept safe for years with deadwood removal and weight reduction. A tree with major trunk decay is a different story.

Will stump grinding hurt my old foundation?

Not if it is done with care. We grind in stages near old stone or brick foundations and stop short of the masonry, then cut remaining roots by hand where needed.
