Fifteen-Plus Years After the Storm
A lot of the Tree Service in Blackman we are asked about traces back to one day. On April 10, 2009, the EF4 tornado that crossed the Murfreesboro area destroyed hundreds of homes in the Blackman community and heavily damaged many more. The National Weather Service survey traced its path from near Kelley Road and Highway 41A, southwest of the city, with damage along Rocky Grove Road, Patterson Road and Newman Road before it reached Highland Park Drive and Tomahawk Trace.
When a neighborhood rebuilds, it replants at the same time. Trees put in the ground around 2010 are now mid-sized. Some were fast growers picked to bring back shade quickly, and some went in closer to the house than a full-grown tree needs. Those are the trees we look at most closely on the west side: is the trunk too near the foundation, does the crown have one strong leader or several competing ones, and is it already touching the gutters?
A community older than the subdivisions
Blackman is not a new name. Alfred Blackman founded the settlement in 1808, and it was first known as Blackman's Shop. By the Civil War it had a store, doctors' offices, a school and churches. Its post office opened in 1898 and was later folded into Murfreesboro's. Today Blackman is an unincorporated community on the west side of Murfreesboro, near Interstate 840, served by Blackman Elementary, Middle and High schools and the 37128 and 37129 ZIP codes. Because some addresses are inside Murfreesboro city limits and some are in unincorporated Rutherford County, the rules for brush pickup depend on which side of the line you are on.
Inside the city or out?
If your home is within Murfreesboro city limits, city brush collection applies: pieces up to 6 feet long and 8 inches thick, in a single pile parallel to the street. If you are in the county, those city trucks do not serve you, and you will want the tree company to remove the wood. Tell us your situation when you call and we will price the cleanup to match.
Work we do in Blackman yards
- Structural pruning on trees planted after 2009 that now crowd roofs, decks and fences
- Removal of trees whose trunks were set too close to a foundation or driveway
- Deadwood removal in older trees that survived the storm but carry broken stubs or old wounds
- Grinding stumps left from storm cleanup that were never fully removed
- Assessing trees that lean toward the house after a heavy rain
Utility lines
Middle Tennessee Electric lists vegetation contacts for both Murfreesboro City and Rutherford County, and its tree program number is (877) 414-7685. Limbs touching primary lines are the utility's to clear.

Blackman Questions
The trees we planted after the 2009 tornado are getting big. Do they need work?
Often, yes. Trees planted around 2010 are now at the size where competing leaders and limbs over the roof start to matter. A structural prune now is a smaller job than a removal later.
Will Murfreesboro pick up my brush if I live in Blackman?
Only if your home is inside Murfreesboro city limits. County addresses are not on the city brush route, so plan on the tree company hauling the debris.
There is still an old stump from the storm cleanup. Can it be ground out?
Yes. Old stumps are usually softer and grind faster than fresh ones. We check for buried lines and irrigation first, then grind below grade so you can reseed.
How do I know if a tree that survived 2009 is still sound?
Look for cracks where big limbs join the trunk, cavities, mushrooms at the base, and dead branches high in the crown. A tree can heal over storm wounds on the outside and still have decay inside. If you see any of those signs on a tree within reach of the house, have it inspected before deciding whether to prune or remove it.
