The Smyrna Rule Most People Find Out Too Late

If you are pricing Tree Service in Smyrna, read this first: the Town of Smyrna's brush service only collects brush cut by the property owner. Its Public Works page states that contractors must remove all brush themselves. A tree company that drops limbs and leaves a pile by the road is leaving you with a pile the town will not take. Every Smyrna estimate we write includes chipping and hauling the debris unless you tell us you want the wood left.

How Smyrna's brush service runs

Smyrna is big for a town. The 2020 census counted 53,070 residents, the most of any Tennessee municipality incorporated as a town, and the Census Bureau's 2025 estimate is 63,321. Public Works runs its brush trucks one section of town at a time, and homeowners do not need to call for a pickup. The service is limited to residential properties; apartments, commercial and industrial sites are excluded.

If you are cutting some of it yourself

For the brush you trim yourself, Public Works sets these limits:

  • Limbs no longer than 6 feet and no more than 8 inches in diameter
  • Piles no larger than 10 feet long, 10 feet deep and 5 feet tall; anything bigger is handled as a special pickup when crews have time
  • Piles within 5 feet of the roadway and at least 2 feet behind any sidewalk
  • One pile, kept clear of trees, fences, utilities and ditches, and never in the street

Leaves follow a different rule. Smyrna takes them in brown, biodegradable paper bags at the edge of the yard. Plastic bags are not picked up.

Lake edges and creek bottoms

Parts of Percy Priest Lake fall inside Smyrna's town limits, and the Stones River and Stewarts Creek are its two main waterways. Trees along creek banks and lake edges grow in soil that stays wet for long stretches, and wet ground is where shallow-rooted trees tend to tip in a strong wind. If you live near Stewarts Creek and a tree has developed a new lean or a mound of lifted soil on one side, have it looked at before storm season. Note that the land around Percy Priest Lake is federal public land managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. We only work on trees on your own lot.

Homes and yards

Census QuickFacts puts Smyrna's owner-occupied rate at 57.4%, its median owner-occupied home value at $358,300 and its average household at 2.79 people. In subdivision yards, the trees a builder planted eventually reach the roofline, and that is the stage when a structural prune pays off: removing one of two competing leaders, shortening limbs that reach over the house, and clearing the area above the driveway.

Where we usually start

1. Walk the yard with you and mark each tree to prune, remove or leave 2. Note anything near the service drop or the street, where the utility or town may have a say 3. Write up the price with debris hauling included 4. Grind stumps on the same visit if you want them gone

Smyrna Questions

Can I leave the limbs from my tree removal at the curb in Smyrna?

Not if a contractor cut them. Smyrna's brush service is for brush cut by the property owner, and the town says contractors must remove their own. That is why our Smyrna quotes include haul-off by default.

Do I need to call Public Works to get brush picked up?

No. The town works through one section at a time, so you just need the pile placed correctly. The Public Works office number is (615) 459-9766 if you have a question.

Can you clear trees on the Corps of Engineers land behind my house near the lake?

No. The public land around Percy Priest Lake is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and we do not cut trees there. We can work on trees that are on your side of the property line.

Is it worth pruning a young tree in a newer subdivision?

Usually, yes. Correcting a double leader or a crowded crown while the tree is small takes a few cuts. Waiting until the same tree is over the roof makes the job larger and the cuts bigger.
