Tree Work in a City That Grew Fast

Tree Service in Murfreesboro covers a wide range of yards. The 2020 census counted 152,769 residents, and the Census Bureau's 2025 estimate is 171,178, so a large share of the city's trees are young plantings in newer subdivisions while others are old shade trees on streets near the square. Our work here is mostly three things: keeping maturing trees off roofs and away from service drops, taking down trees that have died or split, and grinding the stumps so the lawn can be put back.

Know the brush rules before anything is cut

The City of Murfreesboro picks up limbs and brush at the curb at no charge, but only when the pile meets its rules. Pieces may be no longer than 6 feet and no thicker than 8 inches in diameter. The city wants one pile, laid parallel to the street, kept out of ditches and off mailboxes, fences, meter lids and drain grates, and not set under low power or cable lines. Lumber and household trash mixed into the pile are not accepted. The Street Department says its brush trucks try to circle the city every 14 to 21 days rather than following a fixed route.

That matters when you hire a tree company. Wood from a full removal is usually far more than one curb pile, and trunk sections are well over 8 inches. When we write your estimate, we spell out whether we chip and haul everything, cut small material to city length for the curb, or leave rounds stacked for firewood. You pick, and the price reflects it.

The mulching facility on Florence Road

If you are handling some of the cleanup yourself, the City Mulching Facility at 4765 Florence Road takes brush, limbs and leaves on weekdays. The city lists hours of 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on its trash services page and the Street Department number as 615-893-3681. Call ahead if you are hauling a large load.

What the 2009 tornado taught a lot of homeowners

On April 10, 2009, an EF4 tornado with estimated winds of 170 mph tracked 23.25 miles across the Murfreesboro area, from near Kelley Road and Highway 41A to Lofton Road south of Lancaster Pike. The worst damage was around Highland Park Drive and Tomahawk Trace, and the National Weather Service survey also lists Battleground Drive, Sulphur Springs Road and Thompson Lane. At Stones River National Battlefield, falling trees damaged part of the national cemetery wall and the park closed for three weeks.

No amount of pruning stops a tornado. What pruning does do is reduce the everyday risks: dead limbs over a driveway, a split leader on a Bradford pear, a tree that has been leaning further each spring. Those are the failures we see after ordinary thunderstorms, and they are the ones worth fixing on a calm day.

Common jobs inside the city limits

  • Raising canopies over sidewalks and driveways so cars and mowers clear the lowest limbs
  • Removing fast-growing trees planted too close to the house when a subdivision was new
  • Thinning and deadwood removal on large oaks and maples near the older streets around downtown
  • Stump grinding after removals, with the grindings left as mulch or hauled away
  • Clearing limbs back from the service drop (the line from the pole to your house) after the utility has been consulted

Power lines belong to the utility

Middle Tennessee Electric lists a separate vegetation management contact for Murfreesboro City, apart from its Rutherford County contact. Its tree program can be reached at (877) 414-7685. If a limb is on or near a primary line, call the utility first. We work around the lines only within the limits the utility allows.

Murfreesboro Questions

Will the city haul away the wood after my tree is taken down?

Only what fits its brush rules: pieces 6 feet or shorter and no more than 8 inches thick, in a single pile at the curb. Trunk wood from a full removal is too big for that. Our estimate states whether we haul everything or cut smaller material to curb length.

Can I take branches to a city site myself?

Yes. The City Mulching Facility at 4765 Florence Road accepts brush, limbs and leaves on weekdays. Check the city's posted hours before you load the truck.

A limb is resting on the line to my house. Who do I call?

Call Middle Tennessee Electric first; its vegetation program is at (877) 414-7685 and it lists a contact for Murfreesboro City. Once the utility has made the line safe or told you what is allowed, we can remove the rest of the tree or limb.

Do you work in the neighborhoods around Stones River National Battlefield and Old Fort Park?

Yes, we work across the city. Trees on National Park Service or city park land are managed by those agencies, so we only work on trees on your own property.
