A Crossroads With Old Roots
Triune is an unincorporated community in eastern Williamson County, where old State Route 96 (Murfreesboro Road) meets U.S. 31A and 41A (Nolensville Road), just north of Interstate 840. Tree Service in Triune is a mix of country properties and newer homes on the roads radiating from that crossroads. The community sits along the Wilson Branch of the Harpeth River at about 837 feet, a little higher than Murfreesboro.
Two centuries of settlement
William Jordan built the first recorded settlement here in 1796. The place was called Hardeman's Crossroads, then Flemingsburg, before it became Triune. Hardeman Academy opened in 1828, and the Triune Methodist Church was first built in 1849. In 1863 Union troops burned several churches, homes and the Porter Female Academy. The Bostick Female Academy, built in 1892, is now a private residence on the National Register of Historic Places. On properties this old, the largest trees may have been standing for well over a century, and some carry old lightning scars, fence wire grown into the trunk or decay from long-ago wounds.
Working on old trees
An old tree near a house is not automatically a hazard. Before recommending removal, we look at:
- Cavities and soft wood at the base or in major limbs
- Fungal fruiting bodies (mushrooms or shelf fungi) on the trunk or roots
- Cracks where large limbs join the trunk
- How much of the crown is dead
- What the tree would hit if part of it failed
Sometimes the answer is removing a few dead limbs and reducing weight over the roof. Sometimes the tree has to come down. Either way you get a written estimate that explains why.
Creek-side trees on the Wilson Branch
Trees along the Wilson Branch and other headwater streams of the Harpeth grow in moist soil and are often large, fast-growing species. Banks that are cut during high water can undermine roots on one side. If a creek-side tree has started leaning toward the water, or the bank under it has slumped, it is worth an assessment before the next storm.
Wood and debris
Triune is outside any city's brush service, so we chip limbs on site and either haul the chips or spread them where you want. Trunk wood can be left in rounds. If you are thinking about burning a brush pile, check BurnSafeTN for whether a state permit is currently required and check local rules too.
New homes near the interstate
Because Triune sits just north of I-840, it is an easy commute in both directions, and newer homes have gone up on former farmland around the crossroads. Building next to mature trees is where many of them are lost. Heavy trucks, stored materials and a few inches of fill over the roots can kill a big oak or hickory slowly; the decline often shows up three to five years after the house is finished. If you are building, fence off the area under the tree's canopy before work starts and keep trenching for utilities out of it where possible. If a tree is already declining after construction, an inspection can tell you whether it is likely to recover.

Triune Questions
Do you work in Triune even though it is in Williamson County?
Yes. Triune is about halfway between Murfreesboro and Franklin, and we work on properties in and around the crossroads.
There is wire grown into my old fence-line tree. Can you still cut it?
Yes, but tell us about it. Embedded wire and nails can damage saws and throw metal, so we cut around them carefully. That wood usually is not suitable for milling.
How do I know if an old tree is worth keeping?
Look at how much of the crown is still alive, whether the trunk has cavities or fungus, and what it could hit. A tree that is mostly alive with solid wood is often worth pruning and keeping. We can assess it and explain the options.
